Yeh Jawani hain
Deewani (YJHD)
YJHD; director Ayan Mukherjee’s second after “Wake up Sid” is full of Bollywood clichés. Sloppy screenplay (It would be brave to use a word as good as Screenpay) & the predictable moments makes the story even more boring. The cinematography lives up to the reputation of the Johars & Chopras… There’s no point in mentioning that every frame is polished & soothing for one’s eye. The songs keep pouring intermittently, but the most important thing is that this is the time when you stay glued to the screen. Songs are catchy & are fun to watch on the big screen. But as the song ends the dismal show starts yet again.
Three chaddi buddys Aditi (Kalki Koechlin), Avi (Aditya Roy Kapoor) & Kabir aka Bunny (Ranbeer) plan to go on a trek to Manali. Naina (Deepika Padukone) who is bored with her life where all she does is studying even on the weekends, the geek (All of a sudden) joins them on this trek. We need not asks stupid questions like how does she manage to get on with the same tour group just a day before their scheduled departure????? As this is a Bollywood flick these three buddies do all the insane acts & adventurous ones too during their trip & obviously Naina joins them breaking her image of a Geek by merely dropping off her spectacles & getting the eye lenses on. When you have a fun filled trip your lead actress must fall for your lead actor. Following this GHEESA PITA/old formula of the Bollywood movies Naina (Deepika) too falls for our one & only heartthrob of millions, cool dude Bunny (Ranbeer).
She doesn’t confess this as Bunny is busy following his dream of travelling to all the nook & corners of the world. God knows how but an average student who never does anything seriously manages to get a scholarship from a reputed institute in the US of A. Our hero is from an average middle class family which once was not able to spare money for his Aiyyashiyan with the friends then sends him to USA for joining a course of journalism.
8 years later the charming dude comes back for his best buddy’s big fat Indian wedding. Aditi is getting married & during this wedding he comes to know that while travelling & running too fast with time many moments are slipped outta his hands which he can never revert.
It’s a typical Bollywood movie so it has to have a happy ending.
Cast wise, you get some pleasant & some unpleasant surprises. The biggest unpleasant surprise is that Ranbeer Kapoor is AVERAGE in this movie, I mean you keep wondering if you are watching the same actor who has set the silver screen on fire for two successive years with movies like Rockstar & Burfi.
Pleasant surprises being the bubbly vivacious & spunkiest performance from Kalki Koechlin who manages to deliver a refreshing act. May it be the opening scene in a hyper market where she fights with a teenager for staring at her legs or the scene in Manali where after getting high she challenges the local goons, she does justice to every frame she appears in.
Aditya Roy Kapoor is sure done a great job & is far better than Ranbeer in this particular movie. He has succeeded big time in displaying the pain of missing the best friend through his eyes.
Deepikaaah looks stunning in whichever outfit she wears & surprisingly has acted well too. This I guess must be her first movie in which she has not confined her role to look HAUT as ever only.
Farukh Sheikh & Tanvee Azmi are wasted in cameos.
Madhuri Dikshit in an item number fails to impress, looks old.
The first half of the movie is largely influenced by DDLJ but couldn’t at any point of time come close to 5% of what DDLJ is.
Sloppy script, childish moments, below par dialogues has wasted an Idea which otherwise could have been a fresh breeze, breeze full of youth.
After his second movie people will have only one thing to say to the director, "Wake up Ayan"
One word for the movie: AVOID
Rating: **
